Pepero Day in Korea (11 November) — send Pepero with flowers
On 11 November Koreans give each other boxes of Pepero — thin biscuit sticks dipped in chocolate — because 11/11 looks like four of them standing in a row. You can send a box with flowers, to anywhere in South Korea, on the day.
It is the easiest of the Korean gift days to join in from abroad. Nothing about it is formal, nobody is expected to spend much, and unlike Valentine's Day it is not only for couples — friends, classmates and colleagues give it to each other.
What is Pepero Day?
11 November — 11/11. The four ones look like four Pepero sticks standing side by side, and that is the whole reason for the date.
It is not a public holiday and nothing closes. It is a day people mark by handing each other small boxes: at school, in the office, between friends, between couples. Most of it happens in the morning, before the day gets going.
The scale of it is small on purpose. A box of Pepero is a cheap thing, and that is the point — it is a way of saying I thought of you without making anyone feel they owe you something back.
Who gives to whom?
Nearly everyone to nearly anyone. Classmates swap boxes, colleagues leave them on each other's desks, couples make more of it, and children give them to friends and to teachers.
That is why it is a useful day for a gift you have been meaning to send. Flowers on their own can feel like a statement; flowers with a box of Pepero on 11 November read as joining in with the day, which is a much lighter thing to receive.
It also works for someone you have not spoken to in a while — a cousin, an old friend, a colleague who helped you. The day gives you the reason.
What can I send for Pepero Day?
A bouquet (from ₩45,000) or a flower basket (from ₩47,000), with Pepero added on the order form (₩10,000). Chocolate or sweets can go instead, at the same price, if you would rather.
If the day is doubling as a birthday, add a fresh cream cake (₩31,000–₩38,000) — it arrives in the same delivery, at the same time, to the same address.
The add-ons go with bouquets and baskets. They cannot go with a standing wreath, which is a venue flower rather than something handed to a person. Everything that can travel together is listed on flowers with a gift.
The day before, if you can. Pepero Day is a single date with no second chance — 12 November is just a Tuesday — and it is one of the busiest days of our year.
On the day itself, order before 6:00 PM KST and it still goes out the same day, usually within about three hours.
From abroad, count in Korean time rather than your own. An evening in Europe or the Americas is already the next morning in Seoul, so 11 November there may have started, or finished, while it is still the 10th or the 11th where you are. 08:00–21:00 KST, open every day
What should I write on the card?
Short is right for this day. Koreans often just write 빼빼로데이 축하해 (happy Pepero Day) or 오늘 빼빼로 대신 꽃도 (flowers as well as Pepero today). We write the card out and send it with the flowers.
English is fine too, and so is a mix — write it as you would say it and we will put it down as written. There is no character limit.
