An Oriental orchid with thick leaves that arch away strongly.

Oriental orchid (dongyangnan) is the potted orchid Koreans send for a shop opening, a promotion or the taking up of a new post. The leaf, not the flower, is what you look at. Here a yellow stripe runs the length of each blade, down the deep green.

When a spike comes up the flowers open in a row, and the scent is quiet rather than heavy. It is planted in a celadon pot with a cut-out pattern, raised on a foot and finished with gold mesh — formal enough for an occasion that asks for it.

Once the flowers have gone the line of the leaves stays, and that is the greater part of the pleasure.

Looking after it

  • Light Bright shade. Direct sun scorches the leaves — a step or two back from a window is right.
  • Water When the bark on top is dry, water until it runs out of the bottom. Better than a little and often.
  • Air Somewhere the air moves. Roots suffer in a closed corner.
  • Winter Keep it above 10°C and out of the path of a heater.
  • After flowering Cut the spent spike away and enjoy the leaves. With a Korean orchid, the line of the leaf is half the point.

Questions people ask

What occasion is a Korean orchid for?

Promotions, new posts, formal thanks — the Korean orchid is what people send when the occasion calls for restraint. It flowers for a long time and the foliage stays neat on a desk or in a reception area.

Will it arrive in flower?

That depends on the season and on the plant. Some go out in flower, some with the spike still rising. If it matters that it arrives in bloom, tell us before you order and we will check what we have that day.

How big is it?

About 50–60cm tall including the pot. Spend more and you get more spikes and a larger plant.

What goes on the ribbon?

Your message and your name, printed as you write it. Four-character Chinese phrases such as 祝 昇進 are the convention here, but English or Korean is fine — we print exactly what you type.

Can I change or cancel the order?

Until we start making it up, yes — message us on the live chat with your order number. Once the florist has started, we can no longer change it.

Songhakdo (pierced pot) — formal

A Korean cymbidium whose leaves are thick and rise with real force. When a flower spike comes up the blooms open in a row, with a quiet scent. Planted in a ceramic pot pierced with an openwork pattern, which suits an occasion where a degree of formality is expected. Even after the flowers are gone the line of the leaves is what you keep looking at.

Sending a Korean orchid

A cymbidium in a ceramic pot is the traditional Korean gift for a promotion, a retirement, a new office or a formal congratulation. It is understood as the dignified choice — restrained rather than showy — and it is usually placed where visitors will see it.

A ribbon carrying your name and the occasion phrase is attached to the pot, so please write the sender name exactly as you want it read.

Delivered anywhere in South Korea within three hours, and we send you a photograph of the plant in place once it arrives. If the pot or plant size shown is unavailable on the day, we substitute the closest equivalent and tell you before we deliver.
