An Oriental orchid whose leaves carry a deep golden colour.

It reads quite differently from a plain green orchid, which is why it goes out so often where a formal greeting is wanted. Oriental orchids are grown in Korea, China and Japan for the markings on their leaves, and in Korea the pot is the standard gift for an opening, a promotion, Teachers' Day, a new post or a housewarming.

The pot is gold porcelain with a cut-out pattern: a silver pierced body with a gold rim and foot.

Long after the flowers have gone, the line of the leaves is still there to look at.

Looking after it

  • Light Bright shade. Direct sun scorches the leaves — a step or two back from a window is right.
  • Water When the bark on top is dry, water until it runs out of the bottom. Better than a little and often.
  • Air Somewhere the air moves. Roots suffer in a closed corner.
  • Winter Keep it above 10°C and out of the path of a heater.
  • After flowering Cut the spent spike away and enjoy the leaves. With a Korean orchid, the line of the leaf is half the point.

Questions people ask

What occasion is a Korean orchid for?

Promotions, new posts, formal thanks — the Korean orchid is what people send when the occasion calls for restraint. It flowers for a long time and the foliage stays neat on a desk or in a reception area.

Will it arrive in flower?

That depends on the season and on the plant. Some go out in flower, some with the spike still rising. If it matters that it arrives in bloom, tell us before you order and we will check what we have that day.

How big is it?

About 50–60cm tall including the pot. Spend more and you get more spikes and a larger plant.

What goes on the ribbon?

Your message and your name, printed as you write it. Four-character Chinese phrases such as 祝 昇進 are the convention here, but English or Korean is fine — we print exactly what you type.

Can I change or cancel the order?

Until we start making it up, yes — message us on the live chat with your order number. Once the florist has started, we can no longer change it.

Ilhyanggeum (gold pierced pot) — deep gold leaves

A Korean cymbidium whose leaves carry a deep golden tone, clearly distinct from an orchid that is green alone, which is why it is often sent where a degree of formality is expected. Planted in a gold ceramic pot pierced with an openwork pattern. Sent for an opening, a promotion, Teachers Day, an inauguration or a housewarming, and after the flowers are gone the line of the leaves is what you keep looking at.

Sending a Korean orchid

A cymbidium in a ceramic pot is the traditional Korean gift for a promotion, a retirement, a new office or a formal congratulation. It is understood as the dignified choice — restrained rather than showy — and it is usually placed where visitors will see it.

A ribbon carrying your name and the occasion phrase is attached to the pot, so please write the sender name exactly as you want it read.

Delivered anywhere in South Korea within three hours, and we send you a photograph of the plant in place once it arrives. If the pot or plant size shown is unavailable on the day, we substitute the closest equivalent and tell you before we deliver.
