White Phalaenopsis in a shallow bowl, with a foliage plant set in alongside.
The petals are white and the pink shows only at the centre of each flower, which keeps the whole thing trim. The spikes curve well out to either side, so the plant takes up a good width.
It is planted in a shallow ceramic bowl banded in green. A foliage plant with a red cast to its leaves goes in at the middle to balance top and bottom, and green moss covers the soil.
The flowers hold for weeks. In Korea an orchid like this is sent for the opening of a practice, a promotion or an inauguration, and it is left standing as a plant rather than cut.

Looking after it
- Light Bright indoors, out of direct sun.
- Water When the moss or bark is dry through, water thoroughly and let it drain.
- Air Somewhere the air moves. Roots suffer in a closed corner.
- Temperature Happiest between 18 and 25°C. Keep it above 10°C in winter.
- After flowering Cut the spent spike away and keep the plant for its leaves.
