An alocasia, one large arrow-shaped leaf at the end of each long stalk.

A thick trunk runs straight up and the leaf stalks reach out from the top of it on every side, so it looks like a single small tree. It is planted in a white cylinder with a black saucer.

The leaves are large and carried high, so it belongs in a floor position. A foliage plant is the usual Korean opening gift and stays in the room for years.

Looking after it

Light Bright indoors, out of direct sun. Scorched leaves do not grow back.
Water When the top of the soil is dry, water until it runs out of the bottom. Little and often does more harm than good.
Air Somewhere the air moves. Roots suffer in a closed corner.
Winter Keep it above 10°C and out of the path of a heater.
Leaves Wipe the dust off now and then. Clean leaves breathe.

A plant or a wreath for an opening?

A wreath stands outside on the day and announces the opening to everyone passing. A plant stays in the shop afterwards. Many people send a wreath for the day and a plant for the years after.

What size should I choose?

Decide where it will stand first. We have floor plants for a corner and smaller pots for a counter. Tell us the spot and we will suggest the size.

Will I know it arrived?

We send you a photograph once it is in place. Ask when you order if you want the room in the shot.

Can I change or cancel the order?

Until we start making it up, yes — message us on the live chat with your order number and we will change or cancel it and refund you in full. Once the florist has started, we can no longer change it.

Light and water

Bright indirect light, never direct midday sun. Keep the soil damp but not sodden — water when the top couple of centimetres dry out — and raise the humidity in winter, as dry indoor air browns the leaf edges. It may slow down or drop a leaf in the coldest months and pick up again in spring; that is normal.

Sent for housewarmings, cafe and studio openings and new offices in Korea, where the leaf shape suits a room that has been designed rather than just furnished. It is placed where the leaves have space above them.
