A pine bonsai, heavy at the base, with the branches spreading wide and dipping to either side.
The base and the exposed roots gather into a thick footing on the ground, and above them the trunk bends up a short way. The branches run out long to left and right and ease downwards at the ends, with fine soft needles covering them, which gives the tree a broad sideways outline.
The vessel is a low square pot under a deep navy glaze. White gravel covers the compost, with moss banked around the base.
It is a wide tree, and on its own on a shelf or a table it holds the space. Bonsai is grown small in a shallow tray and kept for years; in Korea it is sent for a business opening, a promotion or a retirement.

Openings, promotions, retirements — occasions where the gift is meant to stay. It sits in an office or a shop for years rather than weeks.
Light and water are the whole of it. A bright spot, and a thorough watering when the surface dries.
Until we start making it up, yes — message us on the live chat with your order number and we will change or cancel it and refund you in full. Once the florist has started, we can no longer change it.
A short trunk turns once near the base, with the roots gripping a raised mound of soil, and the branches spread out low and wide so the tree is broader than it is tall. The needles are long and fine and hang down at the ends of the branches. The mound is covered in green moss with white grit around it. Planted in a rectangular pot glazed dark blue.
A bonsai is sent in Korea when the occasion calls for weight. A promotion, a move to a higher post, the taking up of an office — moments where the sender wants to mark someone’s standing formally. Among potted gifts it is the one that carries the most standing of its own.
The tree was shaped over years before it reached us, and that time is part of what is being given. It is kept where visitors see it, and it stays for years rather than weeks.
A ribbon carrying your name and the occasion phrase is attached to the pot.
