A pine bonsai with thick exposed roots tangled at the base and the trunk curving up to the right.
Several heavy roots show below the base and wind around one another, and from above them the trunk bends to the right as it climbs. The branches divide left and right into tiers, each tip carrying a rounded cluster of dark needles.
The vessel is an unglazed black square pot, set on a matching saucer. The compost is covered with pale gravel.
It is the shape of those roots that stays with you. Bonsai is a tree grown small in a shallow tray and kept for years, and in Korea a pot like this is sent where the day should be remembered — a business opening, a retirement, or a promotion.

Looking after it
- Light Bright is good, but keep it out of the hardest summer sun.
- Water Bonsai pots are shallow and dry out quickly — check the surface often and water thoroughly when it is dry.
- Air It weakens if it never leaves a closed room. Give it moving air now and then.
- Shape Trim the shoots that run away from the shape. That is half the pleasure of keeping one.

Thick roots run over the surface of the soil and twist together before entering it, and the trunk rises from them and leans to the right. The branches are worked into pads at three or four heights and the needles are short and stiff. The soil is topped with pale grit. Planted in a plain black rectangular pot.
