A Chinese juniper bonsai, shimpaku, the base twisting upwards and the branches running straight out to either side.
At the base several strands of trunk twist and wind up together, and from them the central trunk rises straight. The side branches run out almost in a line, holding the level, and fine close scale foliage lies thickly along them.
The vessel is a low square pot under a blue-green glaze. Fine gravel covers the compost, with moss banked up in the middle.
It is balanced left and right, so it sits well in the centre of a reception space. Bonsai is a tree grown small in a shallow tray and kept for years; in Korea it is a formal gift for a business opening, a promotion or a retirement.

Looking after it
- Light Bright is good, but keep it out of the hardest summer sun.
- Water Bonsai pots are shallow and dry out quickly — check the surface often and water thoroughly when it is dry.
- Air It weakens if it never leaves a closed room. Give it moving air now and then.
- Shape Trim the shoots that run away from the shape. That is half the pleasure of keeping one.

Shimpaku Juniper A
The trunk runs straight up and the branches are held out horizontally from it in tiers, the lowest pair reaching furthest, so the tree is almost symmetrical from the front. The foliage is fine and scaled and clipped into flat pads. Moss and grit cover the soil. Planted in a rectangular pot glazed teal green.
