A Chinese juniper bonsai, shimpaku, its branches spread wide and the scale foliage gathered like cloud.
From a short trunk the branches run out left and right, almost level, and fine close scale foliage sits on them in masses. Gaps are left between the branches, so the whole tree reads as a set of layers.
The vessel is a round celadon piece with plum branches worked in relief, standing on a patterned foot. Moss covers the compost.
Tree and pot come as one formal set. Bonsai is a tree grown small in a shallow tray and kept for years; in Korea a set like this is sent for a business opening or a promotion, and for a retirement after a long career.

Openings, promotions, retirements — occasions where the gift is meant to stay. It sits in an office or a shop for years rather than weeks.
Light and water are the whole of it. A bright spot, and a thorough watering when the surface dries.
Until we start making it up, yes — message us on the live chat with your order number and we will change or cancel it and refund you in full. Once the florist has started, we can no longer change it.
The foliage is fine and scaled rather than needled, worked into flat pads that reach out to both sides and hang below the rim of the pot. The trunk is short and the branches do the spreading, so the tree is far wider than it is tall. Moss covers the soil at the base. Planted in a round celadon pot with plum blossom raised on its surface, standing on a moulded foot.
A bonsai is sent in Korea when the occasion calls for weight. A promotion, a move to a higher post, the taking up of an office — moments where the sender wants to mark someone’s standing formally. Among potted gifts it is the one that carries the most standing of its own.
The tree was shaped over years before it reached us, and that time is part of what is being given. It is kept where visitors see it, and it stays for years rather than weeks.
A ribbon carrying your name and the occasion phrase is attached to the pot.
