A Japanese black pine bonsai, the trunk taking one broad bend at the base before the branches reach out to either side.
The trunk swings left low down, then turns back and climbs, its bark split and rough. The branches divide left and right, close to level, and each tip carries a bundle of long dark needles. The gaps between the branches are left open, so the bend of the trunk reads clearly.
The vessel is a low square pot under a deep blue-green glaze, its four corners cut away. Fine gravel covers the compost, with moss laid at the root.
Bonsai is a tree grown small in a shallow tray and kept in one place for years. In Korea it is a formal gift: sent for the opening of a business, a promotion, or a retirement after a long career, and looked after long after the day itself.

Openings, promotions, retirements — occasions where the gift is meant to stay. It sits in an office or a shop for years rather than weeks.
Light and water are the whole of it. A bright spot, and a thorough watering when the surface dries.
Until we start making it up, yes — message us on the live chat with your order number and we will change or cancel it and refund you in full. Once the florist has started, we can no longer change it.
The trunk bends once, sharply, just above the roots and then rises again, so the tree leans to one side and the roots show where it turns. The branches are held out wide to left and right and the needles gather only at their ends, which leaves the line of each branch in plain view. The soil is covered with moss and coarse grit. Planted in a square pot glazed deep green.
A bonsai is sent in Korea when the occasion calls for weight. A promotion, a move to a higher post, the taking up of an office — moments where the sender wants to mark someone’s standing formally. Among potted gifts it is the one that carries the most standing of its own.
The tree was shaped over years before it reached us, and that time is part of what is being given. It is kept where visitors see it, and it stays for years rather than weeks.
A ribbon carrying your name and the occasion phrase is attached to the pot.
